Bourne Mill

Master Plan and Landscape Architecture

Harriman prepared the master plan for the redevelopment of the Bourne Mill complex in Tiverton, Rhode Island. The study assessed the feasible development capability of the sites and buildings to be retained, and articulated a clear vision for the comprehensive redevelopment of the site that spans buildings, landscape improvements, and infrastructure. The result was a coordinated development project that takes advantage of the history and buildings on the site, provides integrated mixed uses, and creates a compelling and desirable new asset that is recognized and supported by the surrounding neighborhood and community.

During the implementation phase of the project, Harriman contributed site design,  landscape architecture services and assisted in securing project permits from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.  Our landscape architects utilized a palette of native plants to meet RIDEM goals in mitigating grading impacts at the adjacent wetland edges, reduced demands on district water resources by limiting the need for site irrigation and  better integrated the project with its waterfront and wetland context. Harriman is currently assisting the developer team in securing LEED Silver Certification by rehabilitating disturbed site areas with landscape materials, preserving major existing trees where feasible and by maximizing useable open space on a site constrained by surrounding wetlands.
