Carol F. Gillis, AIA, LEED AP, has joined Harriman as a Principal and will head up the firm’s growing healthcare design practice.  She has worked on numerous ambulatory, acute care, and long-term care design projects throughout northern New England.

Gillis brings the unique perspective of her previous experience as an Occupational Therapist in hospital and outpatient settings to her programming, planning and design solutions. She has designed projects for many Maine and New Hampshire hospitals, numerous clinical and medical offices, and area assisted living facilities.

“I continue to look at all technical or support spaces that I design from the perspective of a clinician.  What is the best design solution to support hospital staff efficiencies, support better medical outcomes, and foster patient-centered care?  How can the patient be better served by the spaces I design? I’ve been on the other side and know that without a focus on these issues, projects will fail to meet expectations,” said Gillis.

Gillis integrates best practices and innovative design in all her projects, whether on a renovation or on a new facility. “I have no preconceived notions starting a project. All stakeholders must be part of a collaborative process from visioning through move-in,” added Gillis.

Gillis holds a BA in Occupational Therapy from Utica College of Syracuse University and a Bachelor in Architecture from the Boston Architectural College. She is LEED accredited and is affiliated with the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health, the Maine Chapter of AIA, Maine Healthcare Engineers Society, New England Healthcare Engineers Society, and the American Association of Healthcare Engineers.
