U.S. hospitals are widely incorporating sustainable practices in new construction, renovations and ongoing operations. This can reduce energy consumption and lower the overall impact a hospital organization has on the environment as well as elevate staff confidence and retention rates and even improve patient outcomes. Future sustainability planning for hospitals should accept the challenge of contributing as much to their environment as they take. Facilities should generate more thermal or electrical energy than they consume, have a near zero carbon footprint themselves or actually offset the footprint of other, less-sustainable facilities and operations.
