Salem South River Harborwalk Entrance

Harriman was asked to redesign the main public entrance to a portion of Salem’s harborwalk that will extend along portions of the historic waterfront. The resulting design expresses the site’s history, responds to the standards of the City’s design review committee, and provides a cost-effective gateway. The design transcribes into the paving the graceful “lofting” patterns of one of the distinctive wooden ships that established Salem’s early mercantile success as one of the world’s great ports linking America to Asia, Europe and Africa. Once completed, the entrance will have plantings, a small seating area and other amenities to attract pedestrians to the waterfront.
