New Community Center
The Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine engaged Harriman to provide planning and design services for a new community center located on a prominent location in Portland, Maine. The new building provides the necessary facilities to allow the JCA to expand programs and services as well as increase its involvement in the community. The 19,000 sq. ft. Morris A. and Bertha Levine JCC is home to an accredited 5-classroom pre-school, after-school enrichment program, community meeting rooms, a multi-purpose assembly hall, library, kitchen, food pantry, administrative offices and senior center.
The building is situated on the compact 2.2 acre site to maximize solar efficiencies, maintain abutter’s privacy as well as accommodate 50 parking spaces, a natural play, and outdoor event and recreation space.
High performance building systems were designed to exceed enhanced energy benchmarks, increase occupancy comfort and control and reduce life-cycle cost impacts. These improvements include LED lighting with daylight and occupancy controls, high efficiency natural gas heat generation, low water use plumbing fixtures, high performance building envelope, and durable, ease to maintain materials.
The complex, phased project includes the removal of existing structures on the site during the course of the 15 month construction period.
