The design of Maine Maritime Academy’s ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) Center for Engineering and Applied Research combines an engineering curriculum, research, and sustainable building systems into a leading-edge facility that competitively positions the college as a leading educator for the 21st century.
The Center is home to the college’s Thermodynamics and Fluids Laboratories, CAD and computing clusters, and an Alternative Energy Research Lab.

The ABS Center is the first academic building to be constructed on the Maine Maritime Academy campus in 30 years. Occupying a highly visible hillside, the building plan features terraced landscaping and a dramatic transparent tower.
All HVAC is provided via a high-efficiency heat pump system to reduce the dependence on non-renewable resources and to lower operating costs. Water conservation measures include a greywater recovery system with an underground storage tank as well as low flow fixtures. Occupant wellness and comfort are enhanced by a shallow building footprint that ensures access to natural daylighting.
