A safe, secure and calming natural oasis
Harriman was commissioned to develop an outdoor space to include a wandering park and therapeutic gardens for patients with dementia on the north side of Building 4 at the Brockton Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) campus in Brockton, Massachusetts.
Harriman designed the therapeutic outdoor space to be soothing as well as secure to service dementia patients. Tall decorative metal fencing was a security feature, coupled with areas of natural stone walls so patients could not accidently stray from the property. Serpentine colored-concrete walks meander throughout and are surrounded by landscape trees, plants and trellises. A masonry garden wall supports a sculpted metal water-fall feature and the garden also includes several pocket seating spots, one with a fabric shade-sail, to create intimate meditative spaces for patients.
