As part of the Fairmount Indigo Planning Initiative, Harriman performed neighborhood planning services to create a transit oriented Station Area Plan for Upham’s Corner. The Station Area Plan is the result of a community-based planning effort that includes strategies and recommendations for improving prosperity, housing, placemaking, transportation, parks and public space and quality of life. The Station Area includes portions of Roxbury and Dorchester within a ½ mile walking radius of the Upham’s Corner Station on the Fairmount Indigo rail line. The process was directed by the Boston Redevelopment Authority and included over a year of meetings with residents and businesses that composed a Working Advisory Group, and community meetings and open houses. The Plan emphasizes the importance of Upham’s Corner as a diverse cultural anchor for the Indigo Corridor and highlights the strength of the current businesses, residents and the Strand Theatre in elevating the position of Upham’s Corner in the City. The Station Area Plan documents the community’s voice for a shared vision and among other strategies defines critical next steps for zoning modifications, streetscape improvements, and disposition of publicly owned property.
