Center for Teaching Excellence

Gorham, Maine

Harriman was chosen by the University of Southern Maine to develop a concept design for the proposed Center for Excellence for Educator Preparation. The project anticipates renovations of existing classrooms to create a new home for the University’s education program – a place for peer interactions, faculty recruitment, and curricular exploration. Key to the design are strategies to allow flexible configurations to create collaboration zones that vary in scale, use, noise level, and learning resources. The center also included a technology enhanced active learning (TEAL) classroom. Specific goals of the space include:

  • Build a community of learning with a variety of multiple spaces
  • Create a high-tech classroom with technology to support multiple content delivery
  • Design and active learning space with flexible furniture
  • Create a lounge and study area where students and faculty can collaborate on work projects and assignments
  • Centralize professional library resources
  • Provide a maker space for curriculum and project-based learning
  • Design huddle spaces for students to work in groups

The 3,400 square foot project also includes updates to building systems including air conditioning, lighting, communications, access control and life safety systems.
